Andrew Christopher Cottee is a composer for The Orville, writing the music for the episodes New Dimensions, A Happy Refrain, Deflectors, Sanctuary, A Tale of Two Topas and Twice in a Lifetime.
Background[]
Cottee graduated from the Royal College of Music. He began his career as a percussionist with the London Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, and the BBC Big Band, during which time he composed for the John Wilson Orchestra.[1]
In 2015, Seth MacFarlane invited Cottee to arrange music for his live concerts, and in 2016, to arrange an album of songs to be performed by MacFarlane.[1]
The Orville[]
In November 2017, MacFarlane once again approached Cottee, this time to invite him to compose the music for New Dimensions, which would air in a month.[2] Cottee was the final composer added to the show, after Joel McNeely, Bruce Broughton, and John Debney, until the addition of Kevin Kaska in Season 3.
Cottee states that he does not think of his music as science-fiction-themed:
[A] love theme is a love theme and a fight theme is a fight theme whether you're in space or in the wild west or in Ben-Hur. I don't think at any point I aimed at science fiction, although there was a lot of [composer of Star Trek: The Motion Picture] Jerry Goldsmith influence and a lot of the composers I draw from were extremely good at science fiction - but I didn't aim to write something that sounded like science fiction. I just aimed to write something that was the right emotion the right size for the theme.[3]
Awards[]
In 2018, Cottee, McNeely, Broughton, and Debney collectively won Best Original Score for Television from the International Film Music Critics Association Awards for their music for Season 1 of The Orville.[4] Cottee, McNeely, and Debney were nominated for the award again in 2020 for their work on Season 2.[5]
