Anne Winters is an American actress who plays Charly Burke on The Orville.
The Orville[]
Anne Winters was hired after several auditions and meetings, which Winters later said took "a long time."[1] Before joining, she felt uncertain about the "vibe" on set - acutely aware that she was joining a cast that had already been together for years.[2] She began binge-watching the first two seasons of the show on Hulu to prepare for the role.[3]
Szohr reached out to Winters soon after she got to the studio and told her, "I was the newbie on set last season and I am here and let’s be friends."[4] Winters soon felt like she fit right in: "I feel like we all become good friends. I mean, you spend one day on that bridge with everyone there, and everyone is BFFs by the end of the day."[2]
News broke that Winters had been hired to play Charly Burke, a regular recurring character, in a Deadline article on November 4, 2019.[5] Winters said she was "[s]o freaking excited. ... Lil Anne is heading to outer space."[6]
After filming concluding in mid-2021, Winters opened up about the character and the realities of filming during a pandemic:
- The Orville set is incredible, not only is the actual set design beyond any other show I’ve worked on or seen in my life, but everyone is a family and fun to work with. It’s a very interesting dynamic to work on a spaceship all day and be in that world. We were shooting a while before Covid and being back on set now even with the new protocols, is still an adventure everyday.[3]
Once Season 3 finally premiered, Winters spoke more about her experience: "This was a very different show to do. It was a really weird show for me to work on because our uniform was our only basic outfit."[7]
After filming her death sequence in Domino, Winters departed the set, deciding not to hang around for the funeral scene later in the episode. "I don't want to see people just stare at my face on a massive funeral arrangement thing!"[2]
Trivia[]
- Winters' favorite day of shooting was when she jumped out of a plane for the episode Domino.[2] (The scene was digitally rendered as Charly jumping out of a shuttle.)
- Her favorite two episodes for Charly as Electric Sheep and Domino.[2]
