Barrett was a high-ranking human officer in the Planetary Union in the early 25th century. She was First Officer of the USS Wilson in the main timeline. She was promoted to Captain of the USS Watson in an alternate timeline.
Career[]
In 2416, Barrett was first officer to Captain Mosley on the Wilson during a mission to the Okudum. Ensign Talla Keyali spent several days among the Okudum to study the Okudum people and their planet's dysonium deposits. When Talla returned from her mission, Barrett remarked that Talla seemed "quite taken with the place" and that Talla is now the Union's only expert on the Okudum.[1]
Alternate timeline[]
In an alternate timeline where Kelly Grayson rejected Ed Mercer's invitation for a second date in 2414, Barrett was promoted to Captain of the Watson before 2419. She presided over First Officer Felson and Second Officer Mercer.[2]
Sometime between September 2420 and January 2421, Barrett led an away team on a mission to an unnamed planet. During the mission, Ed recommended Gordon Malloy to join the Watson as its new helmsman, but she quickly shot down his proposal after skimming Gordon's personnel file.[2]
Relationship with Ed[]
As captain, Barrett's personality clashed with Ed's, even going so far as to tell him that she did not "get" him. When Ed judged that she did not like him, she replied,
You're right, I don't. You complain, you think we all want to hear how scared you are, you're constantly making terrible jokes. And the pop culture references that no one seems to understand but you. Five-hundred-year-old movies and television shows that no one watches anymore, that no one cares about anymore.[2]
But she later added, "I don't have to like you. You are a smart, capable officer who gets the job done. That's all that matters." When Felson left the ship in September 2419, Barrett promoted Ed to First Officer the following month.[2] Ed left the ship by January 2421 to command the Epsilon Science Station, citing both Barrett's dislike of him and his difficulty getting promoted as reasons.[3]
