Chalmi was an assistant to Professor Lamarche in the early 25th century. She was an inhabitant of the planet Sephalda.
Life[]
Chalmi was born to unnamed parents on Sephalda. Prior to joining Lamarche, she had never left her planet. Lamarche visited Sephalda sometime between 2416 and 2421. He gave a Food Synthesizer to her parents in exchange for their permission for her to join him on a quest to find the lost fleet of the Zankon. He promised to return her to her people once they discovered the fleet.[1]
Chalmi helped Lamarche with his studies of ancient texts concerning the Zankon. In 2421, she and Lamarche boarded the USS Orville to enter the Cruxis system in search of the lost fleet. She gave a comscanner containing information about the location of the lost fleet to Lamarche and Captain Ed Mercer.[1]
When the Orville found the lost Zankon fleet inside the Cruxis system, Chalmi learned that she was capable of controlling the fleet with her mind because she was a Zankon descendant.[2]
Chalmi began to pore over Zankon archives, learning how the Zankon used their incredible technological superiority to enslave and torture other species. Deciding that such knowledge should not fall into the Planetary Union's hands, she destroyed all of the fleet but one ship, which she brought back to Sephalda.[2]
Production[]
Writer David A. Goodman created Chalmi, the Sephalda people, and the Zankon as an homage to both the telepathic Krell species and the unnamed ancient species of the old science-fiction film Forbidden Planet. Goodman instructed illustrator David Cabeza to design her species as a "sweet version" of the id monster.[3]
Trivia[]
- It is unclear whether Chalmi willingly joined Lamarche on his journey. Helmsman Gordon Malloy believed Lamarche bought her, and wanted him thrown in the Brig. Ed and First Officer Kelly Grayson opined that Lamarche merely offered to show her the galaxy on an exciting expedition.[1]
- She tried eating food from the Mess Hall's food synthesizer, but the Computer had no Sephalda recipes. She enjoyed a bowl of macaroni and cheese instead.[1]
