Chief Security Officer (but informally Chief of Security or Security Chief) was the head of the Security section aboard a Planetary Union vessel and responsible for the safety of its crew.
The Chief of Security position was usually filled by a commissioned officer of Lieutenant rank.
The Chief of Security's work station was at the Computer on the port side of the Bridge beside the Second Officer. The Security Chief also had their own office with Computer access to monitor the entire ship.[2]
The Chief of Security had the right to initiate Directive 38 which overrode commands from all other positions on board the vessel, even the Captain's. The directive was supposed to be issued only in situations of dire importance when the commanding officers were unable to lead.[3]
