The most difficult part is keeping likenesses of the actors, ... keeping it consistent.— David Cabeza, on drawing Season 1.5[1]

David Cabeza is a Spanish comic artist who drew and inked Season 1.5, Season 2.5, Digressions, and Artifacts of The Orville. He frequently cameos in the comics as a background character.

Background[]

David Cabeza studied fine arts thanks to the influence of anime and manga, majoring in painting, and then pursued web design for postgraduate studies. After matriculation, he worked with an advertising design studio for 13 years. He entered comics as a way to make money and avoid the "public relations" aspect of painting, signing with Lion Forge and Dark Horse Comics.[2]

He later said of his own style: "I'm not the kind of artist who draws out of their head. I need a lot of references."[2]

The Orville[]

Dark Horse Comics offered Cabeza the chance to do a test run in contemplation of a contract but, at the time, he did not know of The Orville. Cabeza says he watched the entire show, fell in love, and worked hard on the test panels to capture the semblance of the characters.[3]

He was hired on the bases of his clean drawing style and close similarity with the on-screen characters.[4]

To help him draw the birdlike Chogs, Cabeza spent "five minutes" creating a clay figurine of a Chog guard.[5]

Trivia[]

  • He lives and works in Seville, Spain, and has never been to the studios in Los Angeles, California.[2]
  • He says the most difficult species to draw are Moclans and the most difficult single character is Gordon Malloy.[2]
  • Though Cabeza worked with David A. Goodman, writer of the comics, remotely for years, Cabeza did not actually see him until both were part of a panel interview in April 26, 2020 at the Mainframe Comic Con.[6]
