Engineering is a major vessel area dedicated to the operation of all vessels and equipment. In the Planetary Union, an Engineering section is a deck or decks located in the center of a vessel, close to the ship's quantum engines that power its quantum drive.

Engineering is the primary assignment of engineers and chief engineers and possibly technicians.

Engineering is an department and location of a ship dedicated to the operation of its systems, especially the quantum engine. Additionally, engineers are responsible for hull integrity, repairs, and updates.

The focus of the Engineering deck is the ship's circular quantum generator grid, a wall providing access to the quantum generator the power source for the engines, located at the rear of the deck. Along the sides of the walls are massive, cynlindrical dysonium field condensors.

The center of the deck is a central computer panel for all systems monitoring and the allocation of ship's resources. Additionally, under the panel, is a navigational array used to allow the ship's Helmsman to chart the ship's course and determine its location in space.

Environmental controls[]

Engineers run environmental controls on a ship, which maintains atmospheric conditions on a ship. This allows inhabitants to adjust conditions such as temperature within their quarters.[1]

Environmental controls can be individually programmed, such as Environmental Subprogram 43 Isaac, which simulates rain on the Bridge.[2]

History[]

Engineering is among the vital areas of the Orville that are invaded when the ship is boarded by the Kaylon. Security Officers armed with plasma shotguns engage the Kaylon, but are quickly shot down.[3]

Production[]

The set of Engineering underwent significant changes for Season 3, and it was expanded to two floors.[4]

Trivia[]

  • According to Seth MacFarlane, the writers frequently place the "weirdest" characters in Engineering.[5]
