Ensign

Ensigns was a commissioned officer rank and the most common officer rank in the Planetary Union. Ensigns served aboard space-faring vessels, space stations, planetary stations, and offices. It ranked directly below Lieutenant and was the junior-most rank in the Union (except for trainee rank of Cadet).

Ensign was the first rank assigned to new officers upon graduation from Union Point, the cadet academy of the Planetary Union, with the goal of development toward future leadership. They generally served under Lieutenants within departments and stations such as Engineering, Security Level and Science/Sick Bay. However, it was occasionally possible for Ensigns to serve on the Bridge, such as in the case of Navigator Charly Burke.

Notable ensigns

• Bortus: In 2422, then Lieutenant Commander Bortus was briefly reduced back to Ensign as part of a deception for the Janisi.
• Brooks: Worked in the Shuttle Bay aboard the USS Orville.
• Brosk: Engineer
• Charly Burke: Served as navigator aboard the Orville starting in 2422
• Davis
• Ed Mercer: Served as ensign aboard USS Bohr in 2401. In 2422, then Captain Mercer was briefly reduced back to Ensign as part of a deception for the Janisi.
• Gordon Malloy: Served aboard the Bohr in 2401. In 2422, then Lieutenant Malloy was briefly reduced back to Ensign as part of a deception for the Janisi.
• Hodges: Relief navigator of the BCV Burton in the early 24th century.
• Jennings: Technician
• John LaMarr: In 2422, then Lieutenant Commander LaMarr was briefly reduced back to Ensign as part of a deception for the Janisi.
• Jenny Turco: Served in engineering aboard the Orville.

• Ycil: Served aboard the Bohr before returning to his homeworld in 2401.
