My friend, I have learned never to make predictions in matters of love. I am usually dead wrong.— Olix[1]

Olix was a reptilian bartender who worked the Mess Hall on the USS Orville. He was one of at least two civilian workers in the Mess Hall, trading shifts with an unnamed bartender.

In an alternate timeline, Olix and Ed Mercer were friends in New York City. Olix eventually transferred to the USS Watson to work alongside Ed.

Career[]

Olix had an unnamed mother who told him "every pot has a lid," meaning there is a romantic partner for every person.[2]

Olix worked at a bar in New York, Earth in 2414. He later mentioned that he once saw Kelly during this time.[2]

Olix joined the Orville as the Mess Hall's bartender in mid-2420. He soon ingratiated himself as a social, warm member of the ship. Wanting to "warm the place up a bit," he replicated a phonograph for the hall[3] and, later, he began hosting bets on Friday arm-wrestling contests between Chief of Security Alara Kitan and Isaac.[4]

Olix attended the late joint birthday party of First Officer Kelly Grayson and Second Officer Bortus, which was held aboard the Orville bridge.[5]

He attended Ty Finn's piano recital in December 2420.[6]

While the Orville was docked at Kaylon 1, Olix was among those who attend Isaac's farewell party in the Mess Hall,[7] meaning Olix lived through the Battle of Earth.

Alternate timeline[]

In an alternate timeline where Kelly rejected Ed's request for a second date, Gordon Malloy took Ed to Olix's bar to commiserate. Olix joined the conversation to say that he saw Kelly and she was "great." He consoled Ed, saying that he will eventually find someone.[2]

Personality[]

Olix had a consistently friendly demeanor and was a good listener, two qualities that made him a favorite informal psychiatrist for bar regulars like Captain Ed Mercer and Alara.

He valued "honorable" choices like Ed providing Cassius advice that brought the school teacher closer to Kelly. Olix also avoided making predictions in love.[3]

Olix took pride in his work and took offense at insults against the food service industry. "It's an honorable profession."[2]

Production[]

The character of Olix was a late addition to The Orville, added around February 2018. In the earliest drafts, Olix did not exist and his lines were spoken by Kanoot.[8] However, shortly into filming his scenes, Ralph Garman, who played Kanoot, suffered a panic attack due to claustrophobia and left the show.[9] The producers replaced Kanoot with Olix.
