James L. Conway is an American film and television director, and directed the episode If the Stars Should Appear.
Background[]
Conway began his career in 1973 as a second assistant director of The Brothers O'Toole, eventually working his way up to be director and producer on many film projects. After a well directed episode of MacGyver caught the attention of Star Trek crew, Conway was selected to direct the episode "Justice" on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and returned to direct many more franchise episodes.
He directed episodes of The Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space Nine, Enterprise, and the Star Trek video game Borg.
The Orville[]
Executive producer Brannon Braga, in consultation with creator Seth MacFarlane, reached out to Conway to direct If the Stars Should Appear - then scheduled as the second episode of the first season. According to Conway, Braga wanted him to direct thanks to his strong directorial background on earlier Star Trek shows. Once on set, he was delighted to find Marvin Rush was the show's director of photography. Rush had served as director of photography under Conway when he directed the pilot of Enterprise.[1]
Trivia[]
- Conway nearly directed the movie Star Trek: First Contact until lead actor Patrick Stewart chose co-star Jonathan Frakes over Conway.[2] Frakes and Conway would later unite as directors in The Orville; Frakes directed the fifth series episode, Pria, and Conway directed the fourth.
