[The Orville] is an opportunity to reflect on ourselves. It's 400 years in the future, but here we are.— Jason Clark[1]
Jason Clark is an executive producer of The Orville and President of Fuzzy Door Productions, the production company for the show, for Season 1.
Biography[]
Jason Clark began his career as a location manager for the movie Thrashin, released in 1986. Through the late 1980s and early 1990s, Clark worked as an assistant director on a variety of film projects until transitioning to producer roles. Starting in the late 90s, Clark has worked almost exclusively as a producer or executive producer. His first hit was Stuart Little 2 in 2002.
Clark first worked with Seth MacFarlane, creator of The Orville, for the 2012 blockbuster film Ted, which grossed $545 million. The success of Ted led to other MacFarlane projects: A Million Ways to Die in the West, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, Ted 2, and, in 2016, Clark was named President of MacFarlane's production company, Fuzzy Door Productions.
The Orville[]
MacFarlane approached Clark some time in early 2016 with a script for the show's pilot, later saying Clark is a "whiz at figuring out ways to do really high end, really, really beautiful visual work on a TV budget."[2] Clark noted the show's lighthearted approach to science fiction that came at a time when science fiction television tended toward dystopian, even depressing, universes.[3] Clark was enthusiastic to work in the science fiction genre, which he loved but never had the opportunity to develop.[3]
Clark's self-described work is on world building, the "point person" to manage those responsible for the creative elements of designing and construction of the show.[4] He was one of the people responsible for choosing to build the USS Orville as a two-story set.[5]
On July 30, 2018, MacFarlane replaced Clark with Erica Huggins as president of Fuzzy Door Productions.[6]
Trivia[]
- Clark would be Lieutenant Yaphit if he could be any character on the show.[4]
- He has described the show as "whiskey with a splash of comedy," referring to its drama-heavy script peppered with humor.[4]
