Joe Menosky is a writer on The Orville, joining at the start of Season 2. He is perhaps best known as the author of the episode "Darmok" on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Menosky wrote the episode script for Sanctuary. He left The Orville before the start of Season 3.
Background[]
Joe Menosky graduated from Pomona College in 1979.
Menosky joined the writing staff for Season 4 of The Next Generation, and also wrote for several episodes for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. As a writer on Voyager, he usually co-wrote with Brannon Braga, who later became executive producer of The Orville.
The Orville[]
Seth MacFarlane, creator of The Orville, was a fan of Menosky's work going into the start of The Orville. MacFarlane and Braga actively recruited him as a writer for the first season, but Menosky was already contracted with Star Trek: Discovery. When both The Orville and Discovery's first seasons concluded, Menosky joined The Orville.[1] He wrote the episode Sanctuary.
Trivia[]
- Menosky is credited with introducing the number 47 as an in-joke to his work, especially to the Star Trek franchise. The idea originated during his time at Pomona College, where a mathematics professor gained a certain degree of infamy for jokingly "proving" all numbers are equal to 47.[2]
- The first instances of the number 47 occur in the phone numbers listed in Lasting Impressions:
- The final four digits in a rotary phone are 4706.
- The final four digits in Laura Huggins' cell phone number is 0146, which is 4 and 0+1+6=7.
