The Medical department was a sub-section within the Science department of the Planetary Union. Medical officers were specialists within the Section section who had attained the title of doctor or nurse.
Because medical officers were also members of the Science section, medical personnel wore the green uniforms that were standard of all science officers but with unique insignia badges. Unlike the insignia badges of non-medical science officers, the insignia of medical officers was a cross made from an atom.
The purview of the Medical section was medicine, life sciences, astronomy, chemistry, biology, exobiology, mathematics, and computer science.[1] Aboard space vessels, medical officers worked in the Sick Bay. The head of a ship's medical department was the Chief Medical Officer, assisted by two additional physicians "with complementary specialties," six nurses, and additional medical technicians and orderlies.[2]
