Mike Henry is an American actor, writer, producer and comedian who portrays Lieutenant Dann on The Orville.
When The Orville's production halted in March 2020 due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, Henry started The Mike Henry Show on Instagram where he interviewed actors and writers, including many from The Orville.
Background[]
Mike Henry was born in Pontiac, Michigan and grew up in Richmond, Virginia. He studied history at Washington and Lee University. He spent a year in advertising after matriculation, then moved to California to pursue a career in acting and stand-up comedy.
Henry's younger brother, Patrick, was roommates with Seth MacFarlane in college. Mike began appearing in MacFarlane's short films, and was later cast in the first season of MacFarlane's Family Guy as a voice actor. He later produced and starred in the titular role of Cleveland Brown on The Cleveland Show, which aired from 2009 to 2013.
In addition, Henry made cameo appearances in MacFarlane-produced films Ted and A Million Ways to Die in the West.
The Orville[]
Mike Henry was the second actor cast in role of Lieutenant Dann, replacing make-up artist Dirk Rogers who was originally set for the role. (Howard Berger, then head of the department, wanted Rogers available to work on later creature designs.) Berger and MacFarlane quickly reached an agreement to use Henry instead.[1]
Henry returned as Dann for Season 2. On January 29, 2018, Henry posted to his Instagram and Twitter several photos of his body being molded for a costume,[2] and on February 27, actor J. Lee (John LaMarr) published a video of Henry on set as Dann.[3]
While he was in a make-up trailer in his Dann costume, Henry and an anonymous make-up artist planned to prank the other members of the cast: Henry would buy a dildo, the artist would paint the sex toy to look like Dann's skin, and Henry would stick it in his pants - making the dildo a lifelike phallus. Henry planned to pull Dann's "penis" out while filming, but changed his mind at the last minute. "I would have been banished from working," he recalled years later.[4]
