Natasha Francis was a visual effects producer for Season 1 of The Orville.

Background[]

Francis began her career in 2005 as a visual effects production manager on Stealth. In 2013, Francis was visual effects global production manager on Star Trek: Into Darkness. The following year, she worked with Seth MacFarlane, the creator of The Orville, on Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey as a visual effects producer.

Francis now works for Starz.

The Orville[]

Francis was part of the first production team members recruited by MacFarlane, alongside production designer Stephen J. Lineweaver and visual effects supervisor Luke McDonald.[1]

Working with the director of photography Marvin V. Rush, McDonald, and Rob Legato, the group created a motion-control miniature photography lab capable of shooting a model of the USS Orville. The process was largely ignored since the 1990s, but revived by McDonald to film scenes of the Orville flying through space. Jon Favreau, director of the series premiere Old Wounds, preferred non-computer graphics effects and loved the idea of an "old school" shoot.[2]

"It diverted a lot of funds," Francis later acknowledged. "And gave it a completely different look. But we wanted to sing the praises of that old-school methodology and the idea that we get to do that in the modern day and age, there was no hesitation whatsoever."[3]
