The navigational array was a stellar cartography and flight-path system used on Planetary Union spaceships in the early 25th century. The array utilizes a spatial manifold to determine the ship's location in, and to chart paths through, space.

The actual navigational array was located in Engineering next to the ship's quantum drive,[1] into which the array fed instructions, but its controls were actually located at the navigator's station on the helm of the ship on the bridge.[2] Communication between the helm and the quantum drive ran through navigational relays. The relays were located deep inside the conduits in Engineering.

Scanning of objects in space were performed by forward navigational scanners in order to plot a course.[3] Based on the navigational bridge screen of the USS Orville, several galaxies are known to have been used as reference points to coordinate the ship's relative position, they were CGCG-161, IC 6041-B, KUG 1285, NGC 4854, and NSC 4926A.[4]

History[]

In late 2419, Pria Lavesque commandeered the USS Orville by planting highly advanced technology in the navigational array, which allowed her to control the navigation of the ship.[1]

In the winter of 2420, Chief Engineer Steve Newton and the rest of the Orville's engineering team install and upgraded spatial manifold which renders their navigational array inoperable for several days. Navigator John LaMarr is instructed by Captain Ed Mercer to rely on traditional star charts while their array is offline.[5]

In early 2422, John - now the Orville's Chief Engineer - recalibrates the forward navigational scanners.[3]
