Pixomondo is a digital and visual effects vendor and one of the two principal visual effects vendor for Season 2 of The Orville. After Season 1, when the USS Orville was primarily filmed as a physical model, the show transitioned to digital modelling and effects; Pixomondo and FuseFX were hired to assist the show's visual effects supervisor Luke McDonald.
Visual effects producer Daniel Carbo worked for the entirety of Season 2, and visual effects supervisor Nhat Phong Tran joined the show starting with Identity, Pt. 2.[1]
The Orville[]
Over the course of one full year, Pixomondo and FuseFX worked in Maya and 3ds Max to create digital assets such as the cities of Kaylon 1 and the epic eight-minute Battle of Earth in Identity, Pt. 2. Both companies rendered the final imagery in V-Ray. Pixomondo used Houdini for physical simulations such as the Marianas Trench in The Road Not Taken.
Pixomondo assigned a team of one supervisor and three artists to each episode, although The Road Not Taken required a team of 30.[1] Visual effects producer Carbo recalls:
[I]t was really cool to see the evolution from very simple of a skeleton idea (in the script), then getting visualized by our previz group really quickly and really successfully. And then seeing the design team take that, along with our environment leads, and do such amazing work. It was really a cool process to witness, and then have Seth and everybody really stoked about it. It was really cool to see that whole process come together.[2]
Pixomondo worked on all 14 episodes of the second season (including touching up Primal Urges, which had been completed in Season 1[1]), pre-visualizing 1,400 shots, including 350 shots for Identity, Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 alone.[2]
Trivia[]
- Visual effects supervisor Nhat Phong Tran's proudest accomplishment on the show was the sequence of the Orville flying through the clouds on Kaylon 1.
