For the facility dedicated to astrophysics research and experiments, see: Astrophysics Laboratory.
The Science Laboratory is a dedicated area on a Planetary Union vessel established for experimental or observational science.
Vessels may have more than one Science Lab. For example, the USS Orville has at least two, Science Lab 1 and Science Lab 2. The Science Lab is not the same facility as the Astrophysics Lab, which is a separate area of the ship.
Description[]
A standard Science Lab has three different tables, the center one being the largest and boasts a Matter Synthesizer. Computers and monitors flank the sides of the room. All Labs come stocked with scientific equipment, such as microscopes, test tubes, and unidentified devices.
Science Labs set-ups are standardized according to the vessel class. The smallest classes, such as the Science-class USS Olympia are the least equipped. On at least one occasion, the Union has been forced to transfer scientific studies to a higher class due to lack of adequate facilities.[1]
History[]
In the winter of 2420, Darulio uses the Lab to study the Lopovian birthing bucket and is able to find DNA on it that requires the lab's equipment to study further and analyze results from. He later is able to discover that the Navarians and Bruidians from Lopovius share a common ancestor, and both have a claim to living on the planet.[1]
In August, Isaac performs genomic research in the laboratory.[2]
In early 2421, Isaac studies the quantum accelerator, attempting to make the device capable of going back in time as well as forward.[3]
By early 2422, Isaac spent most of his time in the Science Lab and many aboard the Orville informally thought of it as his quarters.[4]
Production[]
The background screens in the Orville's Science Lab 1 are fully functional screens whose displays may be changed at the touch of a button. A playback operator on set stands by to change what is displayed, and times the changes with cues from the actor. The screens were designed and built by David Watkinson and the video graphics department.[5]
