A spatial manifold is star-mapping instrument crucial for the navigation of Planetary Union spaceships.

History[]

In the winter of 2420, Chief Engineer Steve Newton and the rest of the Orville's engineering team install and upgraded spatial manifold which renders their navigational array inoperable for several days. Navigator John LaMarr is instructed by Captain Ed Mercer to rely on traditional star charts while their array is offline.[1]

Trivia[]

  • It is unknown what a spatial manifold accomplishes. The name may be technobabble, jargon strung together to name futuristic devices; reminiscent of Star Trek, which frequently relied upon the writer's device.
    • On the other hand, "spatial manifold" is a rarely-used term to describe fluctuations in gravity within models of quantum physics, and the device may be named after that.[2]
    • In a September, 2017 interview, executive producer Brannon Braga said that the writers had not used technobabble in Season 1.[3]
