Unk was a Lieutenant and Engineer of an unnamed species serving aboard the USS Orville. He served as a data systems specialist.[1]
History[]
Unk was a member of an unnamed species from the planet Utargia. He took to engineering later in life, a common interest among his people.[1]
In August 2420, Second Officer Bortus approached Unk in engineering, aware that Unk's species was famous for producing exotic pornography, and requested that Unk find a pornographic Environmental Simulator program for him. Unk turned to a friend on his home planet to create a sexually exciting program.[2]
After obtaining the Cove of Pleasure program, Unk asked Bortus to tell his friends about his efforts to ensure that he gets more work. Bortus refused, hastily retreating to the simulation room.[2]
When the Janisi came aboard the Orville, temporary Chief Engineering Officer Charly Burke forced all males off the deck. Though Unk protested that the Janisi would be unable to tell that he was male, Charly noted that they had to play it safe. [3]
Personality[]
Unk, despite his hulking appearance and unintelligible language, is seen to be both friendly and approachable. That said, his species is reclusive, and he would take offense to nosey or invasive questions about his private life.[1] Speaking in very relaxed slang he is willing to help Bortus when he asks for a specialized pornographic simulation, and shows little animosity towards him, even after he refused to tell his friends about it and support Unk's business.[2]
Trivia[]
- Perhaps coincidentally (or because his race is known for creating pornography), Unk's body appears to be in the shape of male genitalia.
- This may be a reference to Scrotie the Scrotum, an unofficial mascot for the Rhode Island School of Design. Seth MacFarlane is a graduate of RISD[4].
- Unk's species shares traits with a tardigrade, as they both have multiple appendages and a proboscis.
- Unk is one of only two alien crew members, the other being Brosk, that speaks in his own language rather than his words being rendered by the translator.
- Unk was secretly voiced by creator Seth MacFarlane.
- Unk is herbivorous.[1]
